The goddess Aphaia was associated with the hunt, seafaring, warfare, fertility, birth and childcare, and coming of age. The Cretans say of Aphaea that she enjoyed running and hunting and was very dear to Artemis. To escape from Minos, who had fallen in love with her, she threw herself into nets cast for fishing (Aphemena). She was made a goddess by Artemis and is worshiped not only by the Cretans but also by the Aeginetes. Her surname among the Aeginetes is Aphaea; in Crete it is Dictynna (goddess of nets).
