HIKING TIP “The Gorge of the three Churches” (Almyros Gorge)

The canyon is also known as the Almyros Gorge Keris or Porofarango. Because of the three venetian churches which were built in the gorge, it is also called the „Gorge of the three Churches “. The churches can be found in short distance from the east-side edge of the gorge.

The first church is dedicated to the Holy Marina. It is a single hexagon with slightly bent arch from the 14th century. In the north sided wall of the temple you will find graves with bones.

The second church is situated about 130 meters north-west of the first one and is dedicated to the Holy Paraskevi and Antonius. Actually, this church was built up as a single vault. First was built up the northern side aisle and later added the southern aisle. Both buildings are connected by two arches from west to east.  The frescos are in relatively good condition.

The Gorge of the three Churches is actually only of two churches. Obviously, it came to some misunderstandings concerning the number of the churches, as the side aisle of the bigger one was counted as two different churches.

The History behind the three churches

On a sign in front of the second church you can read the following:

During the reign of the Venetians in Crete, the temple of the Holy of Antonio or the primary Monastery John Farengi flourished in the period between 1350-1669 AD. During the occupation of the whole Crete by the Turkish in 1669 the monastery has been almost destroyed. Today you can find only the ruins of this ancient monastery.

The temple is at the same time to St. Anthony and St. Paraskevi. Parts of fantastic wall paintings have survived.

HIKING TIP "Rogdia - Monastery Savatiano"

Information about Monastery Savvathiana:

The monastery Savvathiana in Rogdia, offers visitors a small paradise, peace, serenity and solemnity.

A small paradise on earth with tranquility, peacefulness and devoutness for the visitor is in the Savathiana Monastery, in Rogdia. The monastery is 20 kilometers from Heraclion and, in order to visit it, you have to pass by Rogdia and follow the road sign in the settlement for the provincial road.
It was built in a wonderful place, on a mountain, between large trees, in the era of the Venetian Occupation. It is said that the monks of the monasteries by the sea had gone there in order to be protected by piracies. The name of the monastery in the years of the Venetian Occupation was “Moni toy kir Savvatiou” (i.e. the monastery of Mr. Savvatios). In the beginning, the Savathiana monastery was a male one while today nuns live in it.
During the Turkish Occupation it was destroyed and looted, as the other monasteries too, but the monks rebuilt it.
The cavernous church of Agios Antonios and Agios Savvas (with two aisles) and the Theotokos church are in the monastery. The two churches are connected with a 200-meter path in the middle of which there is a small river. A stone bridge was built in order the access to be easy.
The nuns look after the precinct of the church with such devoutness that it can be said that it is the garden of Virgin Mary, while, as you walk through the huge trees and the dense plantation, you can speak to God.
A facsimile of the icon “Megas I Kirie” by Ioannis Kornaros is kept in the monastery.
